This conversation provides a rich blend of personal history, mysticism, and practical guidance.

In the first part of the episode, I share my personal story. I trace my arc of being a believing Catholic in my childhood, to becoming a skeptical atheist in my teens and young adulthood, to now becoming a spiritual seeker in mid-life. I discuss how this journey has shaped me as a person and how it now informs my work as a spiritual healer and guide.

In the second part of the episode, I share practical guidance for connecting more richly with the present moment through the heart. I guide you through the experience of softening, feeling, and flowing, and I share helpful tips for strengthening and deepening this empowering practice. I also share guidance on how to integrate more surrender into your mindfulness practice, which is a great way to shift energy out of the chaotic arena of the mind and into the steadying softness of the heart.

In the third and final part, Natalia and I have an in-depth discussion of my book SOL: supportive guidance for healing and awakening. We talk about the twin flows of creation, the relationship between the mind and the heart, the relationship between God, the universe, and the mind, and lastly a conversation about fear and ego. The fear and ego conversation is especially illuminating: we discuss what fear and ego are, the dynamic roles they play in our confusion and suffering, and how we can work with them rather than against them.

Here are Natalia's show notes:

Joseph Clarke - spiritual flourishing: supportive spiritual guidance Reader, In life, there are two kinds of suffering: necessary suffering, and unnecessary suffering. Necessary suffering is the pain you feel in your heart. This is your "karma," your unresolved feelings about the past. It's the "hard feelings" you have toward the people and events that hurt you. It's the pain you're meant to heal through your heart. Unnecessary suffering is mind-generated suffering. Common forms of...

Ugh, look at that belly flat, you're such a slob, it'll say. You're never gonna earn this...
